Re: Dry yeast

And now Danstar/Lallemand has followed Fermentis and they've jacked their prices up too. I know it's not you're fault, but dang!

Have you heard anything about why this happened? White Labs and Wyeast must be thrilled.

So far, Muntons and Coopers have stayed fairly low. Wonder when they'll follow?

Re: Spring time again

I just got to brewing again last night after a long and busy winter with no brewing at all. (Yes, I'm drinking lots of store bought beer - delicious but just not quite so "satisfying" as what you brew yourself.) I thought I'd clear out my hop inventory a bit, so I made an IPA with extracts...

Does Dry Hopping improve Head Retention?

My experience says yes, definitely. Yet I read something that said that hops have to be boiled to improve head retention. I actually had come to a rather unscientific conviction that dry hops helped more with head retention than hops that were boiled. So I did a little "experiment" of a so...

Re: Questions about DMS

John: Thanks for the reply. Very reassuring. Rich: I've thought about a wort chiller for several years. But copper prices have been awfully high, and I was never sure I could do it. Maybe I could rethink it. If you wouldn't mind posting some photos and directions, that would be appreciated. I'd also...

Questions about DMS

These may be the dumbest questions ever, but I'm pretty confused about DMS. If you'll bear with me here, I need to go back about 2 years. I made a Cream Ale that I really loved and I entered it into a homebrew contest. I got a Bronze Medal, but two of the judges noted "some DMS" and "...

Re: Beersmith

I've been using it for a few years and I do rather like it. I have one big complaint that may or may not apply to you: it is rather awkward for handling hopped malt extracts. If you use hopped extracts, you should simply save yourself a lot of bother and NOT try using BeerSmith to calculate the bitt...

Re: Son of Brewzilla

I wanted to, but I just didn't have a beer ready for competition. Not that I only enter "perfect" beers (if that were the case, I never would enter a competition), but all the beers I had brewed recently were either true "experiments" or quick, simple "house ales". Rece...

Re: Ohio Brew Week

Rich,

I'm back and I got my medallion along with my scores. If you still have not received yours, you probably should inquire.

Re: Ohio Brew Week

No, Rich, I don't know. I got it last year in the same envelope as my scores. They must be doing things differently this year. I'm out of town right now so I don't know if I've gotten my scores yet. When I get my scores, if there's a medalion with them, I'll be sure to let you know (so you can inqui...

Re: My Classic American Pilsner

Yes, congratulations on your Silver Medal! I knew that name looked familiar! Did you go down to Athens? I had to miss it due to a last minute change of plans. Maybe we can raise a glass (or two) down there next year.

Re: My Classic American Pilsner

Just to brag a little bit here: The beer won a bronze medal at the Ohio Brew Week homebrew competition(!) Thanks for your help with the recipe and for the encouraging taste test.

Yes. Both emails were in my spam folder :(

Sorry about that. I'll get that fixed ASAP.

Thanks for the feedback.

My Classic American Pilsner

John,

Have you tasted the Classic American Pilsner I dropped off back in March? It may or may not have "peaked" in flavor, but I think it's close enough now. Any feedback you might have would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Re: First visit to G&G

It wasn't my first visit, but one week ago I stopped by G&G with my family for the first time. We were on our way to the zoo. It was our first trip to the Akron Zoo and everyone really loved it. But over the last week, my kids asked me more often about when we were going back to the G&G than...
