Mash efficiency

Postby JG » Sat Mar 03, 2012 3:48 pm

John,
my mash efficiency dropped to 50% today, it's usually 70 - 75%.
Everything was the same - temp, time, volume - as previous brew days with this beer (double pilsner).
My question is with your grain mill. Does the setting change from day to day or from person to person? I know there are many factors involved with efficiency, but I'm wondering if this might be the culprit. Any ideas?

Thanks
JG

Generally we do not change it. That is a pretty drastic drop. I have not had anyone else say they have had any problems. I will check the mill on Monday and see if the setting has changed

thanks

Thanks, John.
Just trying to eliminate all possible reasons for the drop.
I did forget to add calcium chloride to the mash water, which I normally do. That wouldn't cause such a drop, would it?

No that would not have any effect. I checked our mill and the setting has not changed.
