Imperial IPA GG86 Primary Question

Postby ksuclipse » Fri May 21, 2010 11:33 pm

so its been a while since i've brewed and am now doing in new house (with basement). I made the wort and put it in the primary on Sunday (5/16), and still have not seen any bubbling from the air lock. in an attempt to see if it was the airlock, i switched from the twin-lock to the econo-lock, to no avail. the only difference i've noted between this and my old house is that the temperature is lower (65-70F). should it be taking this long? i did fully sanitize everything and followed the directions to the T. the only change i made in the kit was to switch from dry to active yeast.

thanks for any help!!

Some possibilities:
-pitched yeast into too hot wort and the yeast was killed.
-fermenting bucket lid was not sealed fully and it did primary ferment with the co2 escaping the lid and not visibly bubbling the air lock.

You could take hydrometer readings over a few days to confirm fermentation is complete, or taste a sample to see if its still sweet and did not ferment.

i took reading and get 1.020, it says that the anticipated for this should be 1.084. does this sound right? (forgive me i forgot to take initial reading :(... it also tastes much like an imperial ipa, not sweet at all... should i transfer to secondary at this point?

thanks for all the help!!!

If you take another reading and if it hasn't changed (or slightly changed), then I would transfer to the secondary. The second reading is just being extra cautious.
I checked the recipe information and the anticipated S.G of 1.084 is the starting gravity before fermentation. So your 1.020 would indicate that primary fermentation has happened (alcohol produced is less dense and causes the reading to drop). This 1.020 reading in conjunction with your taste test is probably enough with out the second reading. It will finish up fermenting in the secondary anyway. So I would say transfer.

+1 to beerman's post. Rack and let it clear. Don't bottle until it falls clear in the secondary. It should be fine! 1.080 to 1.020 is 75% attenuation and right in the ball park.
